A few days before, Instagram users were taken aback when they found a horizontal-scrolling news feed on the photo-sharing website. Instagram has now issued an apology, stating that the update was rolled out in an accidental move. An official tweet from the company said that the issue has been fixed and that Instagram is apologizing for the confusion it may have caused due to the aforesaid action.
“Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion,” read the official tweet. The updates was such a big overhaul that the entire navigation method of the Instagram app was changed drastically. Users had to move their fingers horizontally in order to change the news feed entries.
Instagram’s claim that the change was to a bug cannot be taken into direct consideration though. There were many rumors that Instagram is planning to introduce horizontal scrolling to the app. In fact, the Explore page of the app had seen such a change in the past as well. In October, Instagram was testing the update on that particular page. Nevertheless, the update on the main page was indeed a mistake.
The interface change takes inspiration from the Stories interface that we have been seeing in Instagram and other platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. Individual stories are shown in the full-screen pane and would contain the necessary buttons. Users can swipe sideways to navigate between different entries. It is rumored that the interface would become the default choice for Instagram soon.
Needless to change, the update had gone viral in no time, as users found platforms like Twitter and Snapchat where memes where flooding. In no time, hashtags like #instagramupdate had made it to the top.
