A new study has revealed that having alcohol in moderation might lower the risk of dementia among many people. Experts have found that people who drink two or less drinks in a day might be at a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease as compared to those who do not drink at all. Cross-sectional research has looked at current and lifetime alcohol intake habits of nearly 500 participants. Experts have considered two or less drinks in a day as moderate drinking. They have been able to find that people with moderate drinking have been linked with low levels of the amyloid-beta peptide in the brain. While people who do not drink at all or take only one drink in a day have shown higher levels of the peptide. The amyloid-beta peptide is a type of plaque, which triggers Alzheimer’s disease. Although experts believe this plaque might be one of the causes for dementia or just a by-product of the disease.
Many past studies have shown that the link between amyloid-beta peptide and Alzheimer’s disease might not be that casual. These studies as well have revealed that heavy drinking has been linked with the onset of dementia, which is the most common type of Alzheimer’s. While moderate drinking might lead to a reduced risk of the disease. It is advisable to note that these studies have asked the volunteers to self-report their drinking habits and there are other risks linked to alcohol use. However, there are other food items, which help people to keep their cognitive skills intact as they age. Tofu is one of them.
