Self-driving cars also known as driverless cars and autonomous cars, are the type of vehicles that drive itself without human driver onboard with the help of installed radar, cameras, artificial intelligence technology, and sensors. A vehicle that can drive itself without human interference or guidance and able to reach the predetermined destination is called autonomous cars.
There are various levels of safe driving cars differentiated on the basis of automation technology namely level one to level five. In level one, an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is used for providing assistance to the driver for accelerating or breaking, steering, staying inside the lane, etc. Level two self-driving cars can simultaneously operate steering, break, an accelerate while the driver in onboard in the car. The driver is required also manually take over the control of the car when required. Level three self-driving cars can park a car in a parking spot and an automated driving system that is installed in the vehicle is reliable but the human driver is still the main controller. Level four self-driving cars automated driving system is able to perform all the driving tasks as well as there is no requirement of human supervision all the time. In the case of level five, the automated driving system in the vehicle performs the driving in all the situations without any human assistance. In 2018, vehicle manufactures successfully conducted test till level three of self-driving cars.
For the operation of self-driving cars, artificial intelligence technology is installed in the vehicle that uses systems such as artificial neural network and machine learning as well as image recognition system in order to build algorithms. It also identifies trees, signals, street signs, pedestrians, etc. for understanding the driving environment. Use of autonomous cars anticipated to avoid accidents caused due to human errors and mechanical issues. Autonomous cars can be used by individuals who can’t drive or do not know how to drive. These vehicles have more space than conventional vehicles. They can also be used for long journeys without causing stress to the driver. Speed limits can be controlled in the vehicle, making the journey safe for the passengers. In the case of self-aware cars can reduce car thefts.

However, the high cost of driverless cars and cases of software or hardware malfunctions that can cause accidents are factors that can affect its growth. In addition, self-driving cars are hackable. This is another factor that could affect its adoption.
There is high demand for self-driving cars in North America, owing to the presence of prominent players in this region. In addition, the government has allowed testing of self-driving cars in some states of US is anticipated to increase its adoption in this region. High disposable income and adoption of advanced technology are also factors expected to support the growth of autonomous cars in North America in the coming years,
By type, the self-driving market is categorized into passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle. By application, the self-driving market is categorized into Home use and commercial USD. Key players of the self-driving market include Toyota, BMW, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.
